Our First Craft! Coasters for Bibliophiles

Okay, so this first craft is pretty self serving: I needed some coasters. However I didn't just want any old silly coasters, I wanted cool ones. So I got the idea to decoupage these nifty ones out of some old books!

PICTURE COMING VERY VERY SOON

Instructions and more pictures after the jump

This project uses decoupage, which is layering paper over the object using glue.

Materials
  • A book with some cool fonts or phrases that you can cut up (paperback is ok with this craft)
  • An X-acto knife to cut up the pages
  • Glue, either Mod Podge or watered down Elmer's
  • A paintbrush or craft sponge
  • Plain cork or wooden coasters
  • Spray varnish
***PICTURES COMING SOON FOR ALL STEPS***

Step 1
Find some cool phrases or groups of words that relate to each other in your books and cut them out. You can choose random words or find similar words to string together (try using recipes from an old bartender's book like I did!)

Step 2
Using your brush, cover the top of you coaster with a thin layer of glue.

Step 3
Immediately begin layering the paper onto the coasters using the glue. Make sure to smooth down any edges that try to curl up.

Step 4
Allow to dry completely.

Step 5
Spray with varnish, following the directions on the can. Allow to dry.

Step 6
Repeat steps 1-5 for as many coasters as you have. Enjoy your smart looking new coasters!

  1. This is a great idea, especially since I already use books as coasters.
