Back to Basics: How to open a book for the first time

I get it. We the people of the technology age, we know how to download a novel, sync it, link it, upload and download it all over again. So how could anyone possibly screw up something as simple as opening a book?

You'd be surprised.

If a book is well bound, the binding will be tight and rigid at first. Without properly limbering the book up a bit first, you risk damaging the structure of the binding and ultimately, the book itself.

How to Properly Open a Book for the First Time

Step #1
Grab your nearest hardbound book.

Step #2
Place the book along its spine on a hard surface.

Step #3
Gently open the front cover...

...then the back cover. Still with me here?

Step #4
Gently press down on the first few pages in the front...

...followed by the back.

Step #5

Continue pressing pages down...

...alternating sides as you go.

Step #6
When you reach the middle of the book, gently smooth down the pages and then close. You have successfully limbered your book bindings!

It may seem like an obvious procedure, but a ceremonious "first opening" will give your well bound books a proper beginning to maintain their luster for years to come.
